Four years after its onset, the economic crisis is even more pronounced. The ruling elites have tried to preserve profits through state intervention. But the attempts to rescue capitalism have so far failed. Instead a public debt crisis has been unleashed and dramatic austerity measures are being imposed on ordinary people.

We are also facing a changing world economy. Although there is a partial recovery in Latin America and Asia, this is not the case in the advanced capitalist countries which are starring at a deepening of the crisis, particularly in Europe.

The aim of the book is to present a comparative analysis of the crisis in different regions and to contribute to the debates about alternatives. In addition to a general analysis of the crisis including how it affects women, contributions cover Britain, the European Union, Eastern Europe, China and Latin America. There are also contributions on the ecosocialist alternatives to capitalism.
