Book launch with the author Alan Thornett
The world is approaching a climate cliff. Every year sees ever more extreme climate events with records being broken on a regular basis. A rise of more than 2°C in the surface temperature of the planet, above the pre-industrial level, will trigger fast feedback processes that threaten to take climate change beyond the point at which it could be reversed. Extreme weather events (droughts, storms, floods, and wild fires) will become ever more frequent and severe. The poorest people will suffer the most. On Wednesday 10 April 7pm-9pm Alan Thornett, longstanding revolutionary socialist militant and organiser, will be talking about his new book at Friends Meeting House. The book Facing the Apocalypse: Arguments for Ecosocialism, published by Resistance Books will be launched in Manchester at this event, and will be a major contribution to the development ecosocialism, in theory and practice. From a defence of the remarkable ecological content of classical Marxism – lost during the 20th Century to the rise of productivism – the book is an appeal to the socialist left to take the ecological crisis far more seriously. The evening will be a chance for robust discussion and sharing of strategies to turn our politics of resistance to capitalism to the broader question of planetary survival.
