In just a few weeks thousands of Labour members and supporters have signed up to the Labour Campaign for Free Movement. The fight for a progressive immigration policy inside Labour is now on, and there is no time to lose.
We invite all our supporters in and around London to join us to hear from our guest speakers, and plan the way forward for our campaign. We’ll discuss both the upcoming party conference where we’ll have a motion (delegates particularly welcome!), and wider campaigning in our communities, trade unions and local party branches. This is your opportunity to get involved – we hope to see you there! N.B. This is the first of a string of campaign meet-ups we are organising around the country. If you are based outside London, email email@example.com to find out if we’re already planning something in your area, or if you can help us organise one!
The UK is at a crossroads. A UKIP-inspired Tory Brexit threatens to dramatically curtail existing freedom of movement and migrant rights. May’s government is scapegoating immigrants for the problems facing working people and responding to the refugee crisis with brutality, barbed wire and detention centres.
The Labour Campaign for Free Movement has been launched to unite supporters across the party and argue that Labour’s role must be to tell the truth about what is to blame for falling wages, insecurity, overstretched public services and the housing crisis: not migration, but an unaccountable elite who have run the economy in their own narrow interests. Further raising borders, curtailing not just immigrants’ rights, but UK citizens’ rights to live and work abroad, will not tackle these problems.
As the party of all working people, Labour should both defend and extend existing free movement, stand up for migrant workers’ rights, and provide real solutions: well-paid, secure jobs for all; stronger, freer trade unions; and major investment in council housing, public services and infrastructure.
