The movement for democracy in Hong Kong threw away the illusion of convincing Beijing to give democracy. Despite the ongoing harsh repression, the movement will rise up again. It has given birth to a new trade union movement, led by young worker activists. The 2019 revolt was not the end game but just the beginning of a long-term struggle.

Promise Li is an activist and writer from Hong Kong and Los Angeles. He is a member of Lausan,  a collective of writers, artists, and organizers of the diaspora from Hong Kong, building transnational left solidarity with Hong Kong’s social movements. https://lausan.hk

Gregor Benton is professor of Chinese history at Cardiff University researching modern Chinese history, dissent under communism, and Chinese diaspora. He is the author of Mountain Fires: The Red Army’s Three-Year War in South China, 1934–1938,  “Poets of the Chinese Revolution” and translated  Mei Zhi’s Hu Feng’s Prison Years.
