About the speakers

Abou Maen AlDimashqi is a Syrian revolutionary and member of the local council of the town of Manbij in liberated Syria.

Gilbert Achcar grew up in Lebanon and is currently a Professor at SOAS. His books include The Clash of Barbarisms, Perilous Power: The Middle East and U.S. Foreign Policy, co-authored with Noam Chomsky, and The Arabs and the Holocaust. His latest book is The People Want: A Radical Exploration of the Arab Uprising.

Razan Ghazzawi is a blogger from Syria against racism towards Syrian workers in Lebanon. She was detained twice during the revolution due to her work with the Syrian Center for Media Freedom.

Budour Hassan is a graduate based from Jerusalem/Al-Quds and has written about Syrian political prisoners and the myth of Palestinian neutrality in Syria.

Yasser Munif is a professor at Emerson College. He is a co-founder of the “Global Campaign of Solidarity with the Syrian Revolution”. He recently spent two months in Northern Syria.

Ella Wind is a co-editor of the Syria Page on Jadaliyya, and lived in Syria until April 2011. Her writing on Syria has appeared in Jadaliyya, BBC Persian, and the Majalla.

Joseph Daher is the writer of the blog Syria Freedom Forever and is a member of the Revolutionary Left Current of Syria.

Rouba Mhaissen is founder and Director of Sawa for Development and Aid, a grassroots initiative supporting Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

Miriyam Aouragh is an anthropologist and researcher. She has written about the use of the internet by Syrian grassroots and revolutionary activists.

Jamie Allinson teaches politics and social sciences at the University of Westminster. He has travelled extensively in Syria and has written in defence of the Syrian revolution.

Ewa Jasiewicz is a Palestine solidarity activist, union organiser and on the editorial collective of Le Monde Diplomatique Polish Edition. In March 2013 she travelled to Turkey and Northern Syria with a solidarity delegation to visit liberated areas.

Bushra Al-Akra is a British Syrian student and activist with Stand by Syria. Bushra has recently returned from a trip to Lebanon, visiting Syrian activists and organising solidarity for those in refugee camps.

Rola Halam is British Syrian Doctor with Hand in Hand for Syria. She has travelled to Syria many times to run medical clinics and was featured on Panorama documentary on Syria.
